Join us for the November Member Meeting to hear guest speaker Theresa Schober present, “Weathering the Storms: A Case Study of Heritage Planning & Management at Mound House, Southwest Florida”
In 2002, planning for a walk-in exhibit within a shell mound on Fort Myers Beach, Florida began, transforming a historically damaged area of the archaeological site at Mound House into an educational experience. With an entrance about three feet above sea level, the team of engineers, architects, landscape architects and archaeologists anticipated future sea level rise, and incorporated the effects of Hurricane Charley in 2004 into the ultimate design. Since then, five other named storms have impacted the site. Theresa Schober will present a retrospective review of the design choices made over 20 years ago against the devastating impacts to the island from Hurricane Ian in 2022, and Milton and Helene in 2024, and offers her considerations for other heritage…
