About the event
This research focuses on pottery from the Mill Cove Complex-- the preeminent St. Johns II (940-1300 CE) civic-ceremonial center in northeastern Florida. More specifically, Hays undertook a detailed analysis of the ceramic assemblage deriving from one of the thirteen site areas at Mill Cove with the goal of converting potsherds into vessel lots. She then recorded a variety of stylistic and technological attributes to infer what these pots were used for and to explore what they can tell us about the activities that occurred at the site.
Victoria Hayes is a recent anthropology graduate at University of North Florida who is moving onto the PhD anthropology program at University of Florida in fall 2024. She is most interested in northeastern Florida archaeology (particularly sites dating to the Mississippian period) and hopes to continue her research started at UNF. SAAA lectures are free and open to the public.
